The Bushwick Historic Preservation Association [BHPA] was founded by a diverse group of six Bushwick resident-homeowners in 2020 in the wake of the demolition of the Charles Lindemann House at 1001 Bushwick Avenue (pictured here in 2020 at top and in 2000 below). The unfortunate loss of this historic property became a galvanizing force, leading to regular meetings with elected representatives and city agencies and ultimately, to our success in getting Linden Street between Broadway and Bushwick Avenue designated as Bushwick’s first (and only) historic district in May of 2023.

As the frenetic pace of redevelopment continues in Bushwick, and after our community’s explicit wishes regarding both the preservation and rezoning of Bushwick were denied when the city decided not to implement the Bushwick Community Plan which had been developed by a consortium of Bushwick residents and local representatives over the course of four long years, BHPA remains committed to preserving and promoting the architectural heritage and cultural history of Bushwick. Critically, we also seek to raise awareness about equity and preservation practices by advocating for a re-examination of landmark guidelines for typically neglected, minority neighborhoods.

The best way to keep up with our advocacy, which includes things like collaborative community events and history tours, is to follow us on Instagram. And yes, we do look for volunteers, so if you’d like to contribute, please do reach out.
